EVERYTHING IS FINE examines the facade of perfection that permeates capitalist society—precisely how materialism, consumerism, and elitism shape our perceptions of value and identity. My intention was to challenge the polished image of the American 80s yuppie and Wall Street culture, which I saw as both aspirational and hollow. By incorporating symbols like bunny ears and vibrant textures, a reference to Sapologie, high African fashion and high class, I wanted to critique how we wear our status like a uniform—something that is both performative and ultimately disempowering.
The absurdity of indulgence that i aim to showcase reflects how consumption can become a distorted form of escapism, mirroring how society feeds into narratives of excess while ignoring the consequences of such desires. Inspired by the novel and movie American Psycho and the webtoon Everything Is Fine, I aimed to reveal the cracks in this illusion of perfection and question what lies beneath the surface of our daily lives.
My work isn't just about critique, though; it's also about awareness—about understanding how deeply these systems are embedded in us to this day and how we can either choose to embrace or reject them. Something about confronting the discomfort of the unspoken and the superficial, to acknowledge that perfection is always a construct, never truly attainable.
