AFRI-CONGO (2023)
Project type
Multimedia Installation
Date
DEC 2023
Location
University of westminster, 2nd year studios, London
The installation of AFRI-CONGO serves as a portal, transporting viewers into an immersive exploration of Afrofuturism. Drawing inspiration from Parliament-Funkadelic's vision of cosmic travel, the space loosely mimics a spaceship. The projected video collage I edited meshes together scenes from Afrofuturist music videos and films, including All the Stars by SZA and Kendrick Lamar, Woman by Doja Cat and Flava by Lost Utopia Films. These visuals highlight the diverse expressions of Afrofuturism—from sleek, futuristic aesthetics to more organic and symbolic representations.
What did this piece mean to me? Beyond being a visual experience, this installation was deeply personal. As someone from the Bantu tribe and the African diaspora, this work was an opportunity to uplift my culture and see how seamlessly sci-fi could blend with Afrocentric traditions. It was a way to dig into my identity—an exploration of where I come from and where I am going. This was just the beginning. Through multiple mediums, I found a space where ancestry, creativity, and futurism could coexist, shaping a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
